Cultural Competency Training

“To be culturally competent doesn’t mean you are an authority in the values and beliefs of every culture. What it means is that you hold a deep respect for cultural differences and are eager to learn, and willing to accept, that there are many ways of viewing the world.”
~ Okokon O. Udo ~

The Wisconsin AHEC system is pleased to offer cultural competency training as a service to its partner organizations. The curriculum was developed by the Cross Cultural Health Care Program of Seattle, Washington. The curriculum is not culture-specific. In other words, there is not a “Hmong Curriculum” or an “Hispanic Curriculum.” The curriculum is based on the premise that we have many cultural interactions every day, with many different cultures — from the culture of our organization’s business office, to that of a specific clinical department, to the many cultures of patients and clients with whom we interact. The training assists the learner to recognize and acknowledge cultural differences in her/himself and individuals with whom they interact, and provides a framework to make those interactions productive and culturally appropriate.

Curriculum

The curriculum is structured to provide flexibility in the length of training. Trainings can be configured from a one-hour overview to a 16 hour, 2-day workshop. The content of the trainings can be customized to the client. For example, the case studies used in training exercises can have an organizational culture focus or a specific ethnic culture focus. Below is a summary of content that could be covered in trainings of various lengths. All training sessions utilize a combination of didactic learning and highly interactive exercises.

  • 1 hour:  An overview of cultural competency. Provides definitions and dispels myths of cultural competency. Participants learn the five elements of cultural competency:
    1. Awareness and acceptance of differences
    2. Self-awareness of individual or organizational culture
    3. Understanding the dynamics of difference
    4. Integration of cultural knowledge within individuals and systems
    5. Adaptation to diversity

  • 2 hours:  Covers the same material as the one hour training, and builds on the five elements of cultural competency. Professionals are introduced to the dynamics of difference and how to work with interpreters.

  • 4 hours:  Covers the same material as the two hour training, and provides more in-depth training on building culturally competent community partnerships and working effectively through an interpreter.

  • 8 hours:  Covers the same material as the four hour training, as well as national and local trends in diversity; the concepts of power and privilege; strategies for working effectively in communities; a discussion of some of the many issues in working with interpreters.

  • 16 hours:  Covers the same material as the eight hour training, but in greater depth and with more exercises.
Fees
The current fee for cultural competency training is $100 per training hour.
