Annual Report - Program Highlights

In this issue of the AHEC Connection, we look beyond our regional AHEC center at the “bigger picture” of accomplishments by the entire Wisconsin AHEC program. It is impossible to capture in such a short article the breadth and depth of AHEC programming that is accomplished every year throughout the state. Below, however, are some programming highlights for the program year 2005-6.

Clinical Training

  • Developed/maintained 322 regional training sites to provide 6,840 student-weeks of community-based clinical education to over 1,500 health professions students.

  • Maintained and expanded community faculty to 578 physician and 274 other clinical preceptors, many of whom are located in medically underserved areas.

  • Wisconsin Express - Provided week-long cultural immersion learning experiences for 31 health professions students at 5 sites statewide.

  • Community Health Internship Program (CHIP) - Provided summer internships for 52 students at 15 public health departments statewide.

Northeastern WI AHEC

  • Obtained a 3-year, $375,000 in a Federal HRSA grant to implement four initiatives for Healthiest Manitowoc County 2010.

  • Obtained a 3-year, $411,000 grant from the Wisconsin Partnership Fund to implement ¡Si Se Puede! (Yes You Can!), a diabetes outreach and education program for Latino adults in Green Bay.

Health Careers Recruitment

  • Provided presentations on health careers to 3,017 K-12 students at 96 schools.

  • Provided health career training to 869 K-12 staff and parents.

  • Logged over 43,000 visits to AHEC’s health careers web site. www.wihealthcareers.org

  • Provided intensive health careers programming to 1,713 K-college students.

  • Conducted four health careers summer camps for 80 high school students in LaCrosse, Madison, Milwaukee, and Sheboygan.

Other Accomplishments

  • Provided 2,790 participant-hours of community health education to 910 community members.

  • Provided 1,914 health professionals with 228 hours of continuing education programming through 70 different educational courses.
