The purpose of this quarterly electronic newsletter is to inform stakeholders of Northeastern Wisconsin Area Health Education Center (NEWAHEC) about items of interest in our region related to healthcare workforce issues. Connecting Students to Careers
Summer Health Careers Camp

One of the more visible programs sponsored by Northeastern Wisconsin Area Health Education Center newahec.org is its summer health careers camp. This camp is produced in partnership with the Lakeshore Healthcare Alliance lshca.org. It offers high school students in-depth and varied exposure to numerous health careers over a five-day period. Students are housed at Lakeland College’s dormitory in rural Sheboygan County, and they visit numerous academic and health care provider organizations in Manitowoc and Sheboygan County. This year’s camp was held July 9-13. It was attended by 20 high school students from throughout the region.

Below is a sampling of student activities. Students learned about over 25 health professions through a variety of activities:
  • Tour of hospitals in Manitowoc and Sheboygan
  • Interactive discussions with 16 health professionals representing:
    • Nursing
    • Surgical Technologist
    • Dental Hygienist & Assistant
    • Laboratory Science
    • Human Resources
    • Art Therapy
    • Cardiac Catheterization
    • Respiratory Therapy
    • Athletic Training
    • Occupational Therapy
    • Medical Lab Technician
    • Medical Technologist
    • Physician Assistant
    • Pharmacy
    • Massage Therapy
  • Interest inventory and follow-up counseling
  • Job shadow on a career of their choice
  • Hands-on activities at Lakeshore Technical College’s nursing skills and dental training facilities
  • Team building activities
