Northeastern Wisconsin Area Health Education Center, Inc. (NEWAHEC) is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization serving an 11-county region in northeastern Wisconsin (Brown, Calumet, Door, Fond du Lac, Kewaunee, Manitowoc, Outagamie, Ozaukee, Sheboygan, Washington, and Winnebago Counties). NEWAHEC is one of seven AHEC centers that comprise the Wisconsin AHEC System. Through statewide initiatives, partnerships, and collaborations, the centers serve their respective regions and the state, promoting cooperative solutions to local health problems. AHEC programs focus on education:
- Enrichment programs for high school students interested in health careers,
- Community-based training opportunities for health professions students,
- Professional development programs for providers, and
- Health promotion programming for consumers.
NEWAHEC’s Mission Statement: Our mission is to enhance access of quality primary health care for underserved populations in northeast Wisconsin. We achieve our mission by connecting students to careers, professionals to communities & communities to better health through partnerships with academic & community organizations.
NEWAHEC’s region includes two University of Wisconsin campuses with schools of nursing (Oshkosh and Green Bay), four technical college campuses with health professions programs, seven private colleges with nursing and other allied health programs. The region provides training sites for the UW School of Medicine and Public Health, Marquette Dental, UW School of Pharmacy and UW PA Programs. In addition, the Medical College of Wisconsin opened a satellite campus in Green Bay in 2015 for training medical students. There are three federally qualified health centers, six Rural Health Centers, one tribal clinic, two Critical Access Hospitals and several National Health Service Corps sites in the service area. There is one family practice residency program (Appleton).
NEWAHEC’s funding for the current fiscal year (July 2017 to June 2018) totals $1.3 million. Funding for the AHEC program in Wisconsin is provide through two grants administered through the AHEC Program Office, which is located within the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health in Madison. One grant is a federal Health Resources Services Administration (HRSA) grant; the other funding comes from block grant funding to the University of Wisconsin from state budget general purpose revenue funding. NEWAHEC’s funding total from these two sources currently totals $280K. In addition, NEWAHEC manages four grants related to substance abuse prevention. Three of these grants are administered through the Wisconsin Department of Health Services; one is a direct federal grant from the Health Resources Services Administration/Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (HRSA/SAMHSA). These four grants currently total approximately $950K annually. The remainder of NEWAHEC’s annual revenue is derived from fee-for-service activities.
The NEWAHEC office is located in Manitowoc, Wisconsin in a building owned by NEWAHEC. NEWAHEC employs eight full time and one part time staff, and engages several independent contractors to deliver some of the substance abuse prevention programming.
Position Summary: The Executive Director is responsible for the overall leadership and management of the agency and coordination with the statewide AHEC Program Office. The Executive Director works with the community and academic partners and employers to facilitate the development of AHEC health professions training sites and related programs in eleven counties in the Northeastern Wisconsin region (Brown, Calumet, Door, Fond du Lac, Kewaunee, Manitowoc, Outagamie, Ozaukee, Sheboygan, Washington, Winnebago). This position is responsible for ensuring that federal and state funding goals are achieved, public policy issues are addressed and effective government relations are maintained at the local, regional, state, and national levels. The Executive Director also provides oversight for additional grants held by NEWAHEC. In addition to salary, NEWAHEC offers a comprehensive fringe benefits package.
